Harmony Gospel Image
There are moments when heaven bends low and ordinary life is forever altered — and the baptism of Jesus is one of them. We long for a word from God that names us and a reality in which our small acts of obedience are seen and embraced. In the river Jordan, the Word becomes visible: humility meets Holy Spirit, and a voice of approval breaks through the ordinary noise of the world.

In Matthew (3:13–17), Mark (1:9–11), and Luke (3:21–22) we read that Jesus comes to John to be baptized. John at first objects, but Jesus insists, and as he comes up from the water the heavens open, the Spirit descends "like a dove," and a voice declares, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." Mark is spare and fast-moving; Matthew adds Jesus’ reply about fulfilling all righteousness; Luke highlights that Jesus was praying when the Spirit descended. John’s Gospel (1:32–34) does not retell the scene directly; instead John the Baptist testifies that he saw the Spirit descend and remain on Jesus and that this was the sign that Jesus is the Son of God.

This moment reveals who Jesus is and what the kingdom looks like: the King begins his mission through vulnerability and identification with sinners. The descending Spirit marks the inauguration of Jesus’ messianic ministry and God’s public affirmation of his beloved Son. Don’t miss the weight here — God’s approval is not given to power or privilege but to obedience and solidarity. The challenge: following Jesus carries humility and might mean stepping into places that feel unglamorous or risky. The grace: that same Spirit comes to empower and to affirm you, not because of your merit but because you belong.

Today, make this gospel practical. Take a minute with a bowl or your morning sink: dip your fingers in water, remember your baptismal identity, and pray simply, "Lord, I give myself; send your Spirit to empower me for one obedient step today." Pick one small act of humble obedience — call a person you’ve avoided, forgive a debt, volunteer for an inconvenient task — and do it trusting that the voice that named Jesus "beloved" names you the same.

Matthew: 3:13-17

Jesus comes from Galilee to be baptized by John the Baptist; though John hesitates, Jesus insists and is baptized. As he comes up from the water, the heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and a voice from heaven proclaims, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
