Harmony Gospel Image
Have you ever wanted to be seen and heard with such clarity that your loneliness or pain simply fell away? In these brief Gospel snapshots we meet a Jesus who responds to human brokenness with up-close attention and authority—he doesn’t offer theories about healing; he reaches out and opens what is closed. That matters today because so much of our suffering is made worse by being ignored, misunderstood, or spoken about rather than spoken to.

Matthew 15:29–31 records Jesus moving to the shores of the Sea of Galilee, where crowds bring the lame, the blind, the mute, and the crippled; he heals many and the people glorify God. Mark 7:31–37 gives a fuller, more intimate scene: a man who is both deaf and has a speech impediment is brought to Jesus; Jesus takes him aside, touches his ears and tongue, looks up to heaven, and says “Ephphatha” (Be opened), and the man is healed. Matthew summarizes a wide sweep of compassion; Mark gives the vivid, physical detail. Neither account appears in John’s Gospel in this form.

These passages reveal Jesus as both compassionate healer and authoritative Lord of the Kingdom: he enters messy human need, uses embodied gestures (touch, word, look), and restores people to community. Don’t miss the weight here—this is not magic nor mere sympathy; it’s the inbreaking of God’s restorative reign. The challenge is that the Gospel calls us to bring our real, stuttering needs into the presence of Christ rather than pretending they’re fine. The grace is that he meets us there—tenderly, decisively, and with divine authority.

Practical next step: today, practice an “Ephphatha” moment. Find one person—someone you live with, work with, or haven’t called in a while—and give them undivided attention for five minutes. Put away devices, ask two open questions, and listen. Or in prayer, ask God to open your ears to hear what you’re avoiding and to loosen your tongue to speak truth and grace. Small, embodied acts of attention can be channels of the same healing kingdom Jesus brings.

Matthew: 15:29-31

Jesus went up on a mountainside where large crowds brought him the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; he healed them, and the people were amazed and praised God for the miraculous healings.
