Harmony Gospel Image
We long for certain points of contact with God — for moments when heaven seems to touch earth and our choices matter beyond the moment. Matthew 18:18–20 gives us that promise in plain, unsettling language: the church’s decisions and prayers carry weight because of Christ’s presence. The question is not whether we can bend God's will, but whether we will live with the gravity and humility that kind of responsibility requires.

In simple words: Jesus tells his followers that the community has authority to “bind and loose” — to make judgments and decisions that will stand before God — and that when two or three agree in prayer about something, the Father will act. He caps the thought with a promise: whenever even a small number gather in his name, he is there with them. These verses come in Matthew’s account (not paralleled in the other Gospels) and follow his teaching about confronting sin and seeking restoration within the community.

This passage reveals a few hard truths about Jesus and the kingdom. First, Jesus entrusts real power to his people — not power for domination but for faithful stewardship: protecting truth, encouraging repentance, and restoring relationships. Second, the promise of presence (he is with them) grounds that authority: it’s Christ’s accompaniment, not our cleverness, that makes decisions binding before heaven. Don’t miss the weight here — community life matters, and how we handle conflict, forgiveness, and prayer affects souls. At the same time, this is an act of grace: the same Jesus who disciplines the sheep also promises to be with them in their weakness and to answer communal cries for mercy.

Today, practice this in a concrete way. If you’re nursing a wound or need correction, take Matthew’s steps: go privately to the person; if that fails, bring one or two trusted friends and ask for prayer and hard counsel together. Or gather two others and agree on a specific thing to pray about — not a vague wish but a clear plea for repentance, reconciliation, or wisdom — then pray in Jesus’ name and expect his presence. Let your next action be humble, communal, and hopeful.

Matthew: 18:18-20

Jesus tells his followers that he gives the church authority to "bind and loose"—decisions made on earth in accordance with God's will will be affirmed in heaven—and promises that when two or three agree in prayer in his name, their request will be granted and he is present among them.
